Consortium Project overview

Composer Alex Eddington is seeking school ensembles, music teachers and other individuals to co-commission a suite of new open scores for any instruments, voices or sounds.

Each short movement (ca. 30-60 seconds) will be based on an Article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations.

The cost for each ensemble/individual to join the Consortium is $100 CDN, which will entitle you to select an Article from the UN Declaration to honour in music, in a musical notation style of your choosing (to be negotiated with the composer).

Co-commissioners will be named on the score and online.

NEW: rolling deadline

Sign up anytime before the end of 2021 to become a member of the consortium. COVID has made deadlines impossible for some, so this consortium now has a rolling deadline.

It is possible to defer payment if required by your school/ensemble budget.

Delivery of scores will begin in October 2020. All co-commissioners will receive access to the complete score for all commissioned movements, as they become available.

For every commission fee received, the composer will donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity that works to protect human rights worldwide (to be determined).

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Article 1 - U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The DETAILS of the music

  • Each miniature movement in the Human Rights Suite will be 30-60 seconds in length, depending on the length of the Article text.

  • The entire length of the Suite will depend on how many commissioning partners join the Consortium.

  • Each movement can be in a different style, decided upon with the commissioner.

  • The scores will invite creative input from the student performers. Some movements could be rhythmically free, graphical or aleatoric, while others will be conventionally scored but leaving options for students to decide (such as dynamics, phrasing, pitch and rhythm choices…). The notation style for each movement will be agreed upon with the respective commissioner.

  • The music will be written for any number of musicians, playing any instruments - or using voices - or creating electronic interpretations.

  • If performers want, the music can accompany a reading of the Article in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (as a recording, or a live reading).

  • Difficulty level will be aimed at experienced high school musicians.

  • The music will be in an accessible contemporary style, while in the composer’s unique voice.

CONSORTIUM MEMBERS WILL:

  • be able to select which Article from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights they would like to commission.

  • have the name of their school/ensemble and conductor included on the sheet music, above the title of the Article they have commissioned.

  • be recognized on the composer’s website and in social media posts.

  • get access to all movements of the Human Rights Suite (score delivery begins October 2020), including parts in all necessary clefs and transpositions. Commissioners will have access to a dropbox of PDF files.

  • receive exclusive rights for their students/ensemble to perform Human Rights Suite between October 2020 and May 31, 2022

  • know the joy of commissioning new music by a living composer, while also donating to a charity that protects human rights worldwide!
